Verduidelijking; Clarification1.
A treaty that gives preferential treatment to Americans starting a business in the Netherlands. It gives you fewer requirements and a smaller registration fee. 2. The IND is the official governmental body that deals with all things immigration-related. They have a residence wizard that will help direct you to the information you need for your specific situation. I highly recommend calling them with further questions: 09001234561 (within the Netherlands, 10cents/minute) 3. The KVK is the Dutch version of the Chamber of Commerce, where you register as a business. I highly recommend calling them if you have questions. They are straightforward and willing to help. They offer a guide in English for starting your own business. They even offer workshops for new business owners and freelancers (mostly in Dutch). When you go to register, it's amazingly brief. (At least, that's how it went for me, a ZZPer to-be with a BSN number and a residence permit in hand). 4. There are many types of business you can try to establish, but all I know is that if you want to be your own boss/work for yourself freelancing, you should become a ZZPer. (There is no difference between a ZZPer and an Eenmanzaak.) This means going to the KvK and registering. 5. Here's where you can find the English and Dutch versions of the application form (Aanvraag formulier). This form covers many different immigration situations, so check and see if it applies to you. DON'T FORGET- if you are applying as a ZZPer through DAFT, check the box for 'international treaty' when asked for your main purpose of stay. See 'APPLICATION DETAILS' for more. 6. The BSN is the Dutch equivalent of a social security number. You obtain it when you are granted a residence permit. 7. If you want to try to apply for citizenship, you must live in the Netherlands for a consecutive five years. (Please note these 5 'years' are counted differently depending on your residence permit. For example, if you are a student in the Netherlands for one year, that only counts as a half year toward your potential for citizenship in the eyes of the IND.) This means that if there is a period of time where you have no legal residence status, your residence status clock restarts. 8. Here's some info on the Search Year Permit I highly recommend that all eligible people who want to live in the Netherlands take advantage of it. If you studied in the Netherlands and are entertaining the idea of sticking around- do it! You can legally stay for one year, work odd jobs legally, become a freelancer legally, and sign a contract with a company for 27,000/year (instead of the usual 37,500). Please see the IND's residence wizard for details. 9. In some cases, if you do not yet have a residence permit, a business plan is required and the qualifications of the applicant are considered when registering a start-up with the KVK. Here are some useful resources that will help you prepare: -A model Business Plan (provided by the KVK). (You might also need to hire a certified accountant to verify the quality of your plan and get a financial report.) -The 'Point System' which allots you a certain number of points for things like education (opleiding) and work experience (werkervaringen). If you have a certain score, your application will be considered - You might also have a certain amount in your bank account to 'prove self-sufficiency' as well as demonstrate the economic benefit of your business to the Dutch. Its a good idea to speak with the IND or see page 13, section 9 of the application form to get an idea of these requirements. 10.
